One ton of refrigeration is defined as the quantity of heat required to remove from one ton of ice within 24 hours when initial condition of water is zero degree centigrade. Because the same cooling effect will be given by melting the same ice.

Taking latent heat of fusion of ice = 335 kj/kg.

One ton of refrigeration = 1000*latent heat of ice/24.

= 1000*335/24*60 = 232.6kj/min.

In actual practice one tonne of refrigeration is taken as equivalent to 210 kj/min or 3.517 kw.

But, What is the need of taking value of 1TR=210Kj/min, instead of 232.6kj/min. ?

1TR =12000 BTU, KW(KJ/S) = 3412 BTU.
12000/3412*60 =211.0199 kJ/min.
