Above the atmospheric space, air is not available. Hence, the engine cannot depend on atmospheric air for intake of air (breathing). The engine cannot be an air breathing engine. Exclusive oxygen cylinders will be carried by the Rocket.

Rocket engines does not use atmospheric oxygen to burn the fuel. Since they need no external material to form their jet, rocket engines can perform in a vacuum and thus can be used to propel spacecraft and ballistic missiles.

Rocket engines did not breath the atmosphere air because it has specified liquid oxygen tank.
