Inter cooling is to reduce the temperature of the compress gas which reduce its volume, so the work done by the comperessor will be less for less volume, which will reduce the input power. After the inter cooler there should be a seperetor to prevent any liqude from entering the comperessor.

Perfect ineter cooling:

Temperature of air leaving inter cooler (T3) = atm air temp (T1).
