As the name signifies, the anti-lock braking system is a safety system in cars and other automobiles that keeps their wheels from locking up and helps their drivers to maintain steering control. Also referred to as the anti-skid braking system sometimes, it enables the wheels of a vehicle to maintain tractive contact with the ground so that they don't go into an uncontrolled skid.
With ABS, you have more control on your car during situations such as sudden braking. Basically, it is designed to help the driver maintain some steering ability and avoid skidding while braking.

ABS are antilocking braking system. It prevents from steering lock and prevents from the skit. When we apply a break then wheel get a lock and due to movement of inertia vehicle not able to steerable. Due to that vehicle is unable or prevent from the collision.

ABS-Anti lock Breaking System.
When you press the brake pedal it releases the brake pressure in brake line of the braking system in order to avoid locking of wheels.
Locking up of wheel leads to sliding of wheel so steering will not in driver control during this situation.
ABS helps to avoid sliding and to have better directional.
