Transfer case comprises of gears which are used to split power between front and rear wheels. Moreover, on highways, the transmission can totally given up to the rear wheels, to utilize a power for speed gaining rather than torque. This conditions indirectly make the Transfer case to be considered as a GEARBOX.

Strictly speaking, there are four gearboxes in 4WD. Other two are the Differential Gear box arranged on both the axles. Though it is not manually handled by the driver, but it is consistently used to change the relative speed of the Inner and Outer wheels even for the slight turn of a vehicle, obviously using gears. Refer any reliable source and you will find that Differential gear box is categorized in Gear box section.

Gear box is one but there is additional box known as transfer case. This box consist only the mechanism to split power from the drive line into two parts first to the propeller shaft going rear another one to the front wheel.

There is no other gears in transfer case to provide varying speed ratio thus cannot be counted as 2nd gear box.
