Drive shaft is connected to the ring gear via a pinion gear; the ring gear has a spider gear (connected on it's edge). The spider gear is connected to the side gears.

When the ring gear rotates in tandem with pinion (of drive shaft); spider gear revolves along with it (ring gear). Spider gear is meshed with side gears (which ultimately are connected to the wheels).
