The formula to calculate mechanical efficiency is;

Mechanical efficiency = brake power (B.P) divided by indicated power (I.P) multiplied by 100%.
Mechanical efficiency = (B.P/ I.P)100%.

For example; An engine develops a brake power of 120 kw at the speed of 3000 rev/min. At this speed the indicated power is 140kw. calculate the mechanical efficiency of the engine at this speed.

Mechanical efficency = (120/140)100% = 85.7%.
