Generally their are two O2 sensors Primary O2 sensor and Secondary O2 sensor which situated in tail pipe and catalytic converter is associated with them.

The O2 sensor will calculate the amount of oxygen present in exhaust gas and also in the atmosphere.
When the oxygen level in the exhaust gas increases or decreases than the atmospheric condition. The O2 sensor will adjust the air fuel ratio to bring the oxygen to optimum level.
