Since, in petrol engines, the combination takes place with the help of a spark plug but in diesel engines, the combination is takes place with the help of compress air. So that maximum torque is required to compress the air. So a bigger flywheel is required in a diesel engine.

When the diesel engine is compared with petrol its combustion process is different like petrol burning with help of spark plug and diesel burning of the help of compressed heat air so its compared diesel engine needs high torque for better compression so diesel engine has required bigger flywheel then petrol engine.

Because in diesel engine, it has high load (weight) fly wheel required.

Diesel engines are quite heavy and they require bigger flywheel.
