The self-ignition temperature of petrol is higher than the self-ignition temperature of diesel. So, in petrol engine Spark plug is used to ignite the fuel, while in diesel engine during the compression stroke temperature reaches the self-ignition temperature of diesel and hence diesel ignites.

Petrol ignites by spark help of spark plug so it's called a spark ignition engine.

Diesel ignites by high temp and compression of air so it's called compression ignition engine.

Only spark plugs ignite the highly compress air and fuel mixture in petrol engine or SI engines.
