Why not option A. Freedom of press is not exactly implied in the para.

@Joseph- I think C is the correct answer as they have mentioned in the para that press should not be afraid of criticizing the government which clearly indicate that freedom of press is necessary for proper functioning of democracy.

I think it should be "A" as the para is mostly about what the Press "Should do" and hence implies that it has an important role to play.

It is not related to press's rights (freedom). Its related to press's duty (being true and helping in reforms).

So, correct answer should be A.

Option C is correct.

A. The para does not talk of democracy and press AT ALL. E shouldn't apply our imagination and reasoning in such questions.

B. Again it is not supported anywhere in the para. Don't apply our imagination and reasoning in such questions.

E. The para talks of criticizing the government.

C and D very close. Everything of opt C is supported by para undoubtedly. However "by the governments as an effective media" of option D is not supported by the para.

I hope it helps.

@Mohit Lamba.

Democracy is mentioned in option C also.

I think both A and C is correct.

I think A is the closest answer for this. " the freedom of press is essential for the proper functioning of democracy". It means press cannot behave as per their choice.
