Logical Reasoning - Statement and Assumption - Discussion
Discussion Forum : Statement and Assumption - Section 1 (Q.No. 26)
Directions to Solve
In each question below is given a statement followed by two assumptions numbered I and II. You have to consider the statement and the following assumptions and decide which of the assumptions is implicit in the statement.
Give answer
- (A) If only assumption I is implicit
- (B) If only assumption II is implicit
- (C) If either I or II is implicit
- (D) If neither I nor II is implicit
- (E) If both I and II are implicit.

Statement: You know that your suit is excellent when people ask about your tailor who tailored the suit.
Assumptions:
- People do not ask about your tailor if your suit is not good.
- The people want to know the criterion of an excellent suit.
Answer: Option
Explanation:
The statement mentions that if the people ask about the tailor, your suit is good. This means that people ask only in the situation when the thing is good. So, I is implicit. The criteria of an excellent suit is not mentioned. So, II is not implicit.

According to me, the Answer is B.

Yes, I agree this, it may possible that people want to know about the criterion of the designed suit because they like it as it is excellent in design. So, B is an implicit assumption.

Here, it may possible that people want to know about the criterion of the designed suit because they like it as it is excellent in design. So, B is an implicit assumption.

D is the answer, both assumptions are not required.

The problem uses different terms. First in the statement the word "excellent" is used and then in the assumption the word "good" is used. When we are talking about logical reasoning, "good" does NOT equal "excellent".
In my point of view, the solution you offer is wrong as long as you keep this contradiction in terms.

Nothing is given in the question what if people do not ask. So I one should be out of scope. Tailor can be one of the criteria for excellent suit. So II should be correct answer.
Someone please clear the doubts. These questions are very very confusing for me.

Neither of the assumption are implicit. As if we go by the basic principles of reasoning we can say, that if people ask about the suit it is good, then if people do not ask about the suit it may or MAY NOT be good. Hence, Assumption I is negated.
While the II one says people wants to know "The criterion of a good suit" which does stand with the statement as no criteria or criterion forms any part of the statement, neither exclusively, nor implicitly. And if people ask to compliment a good suit it is but obvious that they do know the criterion of a good suit, negating the II assumption as well.
Thus, the answer should be [E] neither I nor II.

People MAY STILL ask about your suit if your suit is not "Excellent". It maybe a little less than "Excellent" and people MAY still ask about it.
And they do want to know the criterion which is in relation why people would ask about the tailor. People want to know the tailor and also if the tailor is the criterion for an "Excellent" suit.
So [B].
