Discussion Forum : Statement and Argument - Section 3 (Q.No. 5)
Directions to Solve

Each question given below consists of a statement, followed by three or four arguments numbered I, II, III and IV. You have to decide which of the arguments is/are 'strong' arguments) and which is/are 'weak' arguments) and accordingly choose your answer from the alternatives given below each question.

5.

Statement: Should trade unions be banned completely?

Arguments:

  1. Yes. Workers can concentrate on production.
  2. No. This is the only way through which employees can put their demands before the management.
  3. Yes. Employees get their illegal demands fulfilled through these unions.
  4. No. Trade unions are not banned in other economically advanced countries.

Only I is strong
Only II is strong
Only I and II are strong
Only I, II and III are strong
None of these
Answer: Option
Explanation:
Clearly, trade unions provide a common platform for the workers to voice their demands and protests and thus ensure that they are not subdued or exploited. So, argument II holds strong, while I and III do not. Besides, the idea of imitation of other countries in the implementation of a certain policy holds no relevance. So, argument IV also does not hold strong.

@All.

"Only" is a restrictive word that rules out other options of dialogue.

The answer "B" Must have been intended to give back to the Trade Unions' support towards this platform.

option E is correct. Usage of "Only" is always a weak argument. there are other grievance redressal methods too.

They used the word only, that makes it a weak argument.

Trade union is not the only way. I think option E is correct.

Trade unions are not the only way through which a worker can put through their grievances.

A worker can simply approach management with their issues. Unions are not the end all be all, people have the ability to speak without them, therefor the answer should clearly be E) None of these.

Why not statement 1 ? if money will be on daily basis then worker will not more focus on their production because they know that whatever will be the production of the company that will not matter for the worker because their payment is on daily basis. So as I think statement 1 is correct.

I don't agree with the answer Because trade union is not only way through which worker can put their grievances. May be there are some other ways also.

Yes. I agree with the answer B. But, there are also cases where the workers resort to strikes forcing the management to satisfy their needs which may be illegal too. I mean to say that we have seen the positive side of the situation and we need to consider the other side of the situation as well.
