Logical Reasoning - Statement and Argument - Discussion

Each question given below consists of a statement, followed by two arguments numbered I and II. You have to decide which of the arguments is a 'strong' argument and which is a 'weak' argument.

Give answer:

  • (A) If only argument I is strong
  • (B) If only argument II is strong
  • (C) If either I or II is strong
  • (D) If neither I nor II is strong and
  • (E) If both I and II are strong.


Statement: Should there be no place of interview in selection?


  1. Yes, it is very subjective in assessment.
  2. No. It is the only instrument to judge candidates' motives and personality.

Answer: Option A


Clearly, besides interview, there can be other modes of written examination to judge candidates' motives. So argument II is not strong enough. However, the interview is a subjective assessment without doubt. So, argument I holds.

I agree to the first point and Discussion is also valid. But Its not like its should be Removed from the selection process.

HRs who take interviews have their own expertise to choose the best among the good. Again the intellectual and personality of a candidate can only be determined by a one to one screening session, that we call interviews.

I agree.

The personality of a particular candidate can not be determined by the words he writes but by the words he says. Confidence, command over a language, street smartness and capability to understand a situation and act in a limited time frame can only be determined if the candidate is put through an intensive interview.

I also agree to the first point. Only written tests can't show the ability, confidence, intelligency of candidates.

Interview is a subjective assessment but there are certain parameters the candidate has to meet. Plus, removing it completely is illogical. It is a method for any candidate to display his/her uniqueness and also easier for the interviwer to make a decision.
