Why not 5 2?
As series started should be completed by that only.

17-3=14
14-14=0
14-3=11
11-11=0
11-3=8
8-8=0
8-3=5
5-5=0
So, the answer is 5 5.
14-14=0
14-3=11
11-11=0
11-3=8
8-8=0
8-3=5
5-5=0
So, the answer is 5 5.

How it will be 8 5?
We have take it as a pair like (14,14) ( 11,11) (8,8)and next it was (5,5) and it was decreased by a number 3.

I think 55 is a more appropriate answer as if 3 is 'subtracted' every time then how 5 8 is correct?

This may be also taken as pair of two no having difference as 3 and second starts second series?
