Logical Reasoning - Number Series - Discussion
Discussion Forum : Number Series - Type 1 (Q.No. 12)
Directions to Solve
In each series, look for the degree and direction of change between the numbers. In other words, do the numbers increase or decrease, and by how much
12.
Look at this series: 14, 28, 20, 40, 32, 64, ... What number should come next?
Answer: Option
Explanation:
This is an alternating multiplication and subtracting series: First, multiply by 2 and then subtract 8.

The 2 nos as one set 14, 28 , 20, 40, 32, 64..
So it can be divided as (7x2),(7x4),(10x2),(10x4),(16x2),(16x4)..
So now 7, 10, 16 fall a line.
And
7+3 = 10
10+6 (3x2)=16
16+12(6x2)=28
(or) Â
7+3 (3x1) = 10
10+6(3x2) =16
16+9(3x3) =25
So the series may be either,
7, 10, 16, 28
or
7, 10, 16, 25
If we take the first series then we will get 28x2 = 56.
If we take the next series then we will get 25x2 = 50.
Both answers are correct but as we have only 56 as option here 56 is the right answer.

Good one Question......P, rajendran is also right.
It's a series of number in which number is alternativaly changed by as usually +X and -8 and where X is jsut got number when it has a turn of +X to change series and then we use -8 and again we use +X which is the just got number by using -8.
Now we again using -8 and got a nuber and now we use +X where X is the just got number [normal like we are changing by +3 and -1.......only instead od fix 3 we have changable X that is changed in every step].

We can also do it this way
14, 28 consider this as first set where the second number is twice as first number
20, 40 consider this as second set where the second number is twice as first number
32, 64 consider this as third set where the second number is twice as first number
Take the first number of each set 14, 20, 32 as A, B, C where B is A+6, C is B+12, so D would be C+24 and E would be D+48 and so on..
So, the next set would be 56, 112 and next to that would be 104, 208 and so on

There is one more solution for the above ques..but the answer s not there in options. Try it. Check let us take alternate no's 14,20,32,?
14+6=20
20+(6*2)=32
32+{6*3)=50...ans.
For verification--
now we can able to see that each alternate no's are half to its next no.
14*2=28 so on..
therefore 50*2=100...{1}
now,
28+12=40
40+{12*2)=64
64+{12*3)=100....(2)
You got the answer.
14+6=20
20+(6*2)=32
32+{6*3)=50...ans.

The gaps between the numbers can also be considered;
14, 28,20,40,32,64,.......
14-20 =6
20-32=12(6*2)
So,
This continues and the gap between the 32 and ans will be 24(12*2) and we got ans as 56.
or
The gaps between the 2nd and 4th no is 12 and the gap between the 4th and 6th no is 24.
14, 28,20,40,32,64,.......
14-20 =6
20-32=12(6*2)
So,

@Sangita you are wrong as you are not making any relation with the previous one.
@Ladani your answer is right but your procedure is wrong.
The method to get the solution is:
14 * 2 = 28.
28 - 8 = 20.
20 * 2 = 40.
40 - 8 = 32.
32 * 2 = 64.
64 - 8 = 56.

I think Correct answer is 128 because its in option and simple way. All the examination allows the write answer guys. It may possible all the four option may be the correct answer. The marks is given due to because. 1 problem can have many solutions.

Answer should be 128.
Explanation :
Sequence - 14 , 28 , 20 , 40 , 32 , 64.
If clearly examined we see;
28 = 14 x 2.
40 = 20 x 2.
60 = 32 x 2.
So the "x2" remains the same in all cases.
Hence the next number will be : 64 x 2 = 128.

Look at the alternate series 14, 28, 20, 40, 32, 64
14-20 = -6 28-40 = 12.
20-32 = -12(Double of above) 40-64 = 24(Double of above).
So,
32-? =Double of above i.e. 12+12 = 24.
Answer is 32+24 = 56.
