Each problem consists of three statements. Based on the first two statements, the third statement may be true, false, or uncertain.

8.
During the past year, Josh saw more movies than Stephen.
Stephen saw fewer movies than Darren.
Darren saw more movies than Josh.
If the first two statements are true, the third statement is

How can we agree. If we see the next question then it should be true here also as it is clearly given the order josh > darren > stephen.

Then how come the answer is uncertain?

I can clearly understand the explanations above and agree with you that is uncertain. It is also worth noting that while the first phrase contains a period of time ("during the past year") the other two phrases do not mention the period. I believe that because of this "small detail" the answer for this particular question couldn't have been anything else but Uncertain.

Let josh saw movies =5,
Stephen saw movies= 3
And darren saw movies=4
5>3<4 this is false.

(or)

Let josh saw movies =4,
Stephen saw movies= 3
And darren saw movies=5
4>3<5 this is true.

So that both a&b answer are correct.

This is how it works:
D is Darren, J is Josh and S is Stephan

the order from person that watched most movies to person that watched least could be either of the following:

Scenario 1:
D
J
S

Scenario 2:
J
D
S

In both cases, stephan saw the least movies, but we dont know which of the two scenarios is right in saying whether Darren saw more than josh or the other way around and hence the answer is uncertain.

Hope that helps :)

Refer to Sundar's explanation.. He clearly explained it and the answer is 'Uncertain'.

It's all about clear. And answer should be true but how come it's uncertain. Will anybody explain it.

Thanks for giving brief explanation.

Sundar said:   1 decade ago
Josh saw more movies than Stephen : J > S
Stephen saw fewer movies than Darren : S < D

Therefore : J > S < D

Example values for J > S < D :

1. 50 > 10 < 40
2. 40 > 10 < 50

Given, Darren saw more movies than Josh = D > J.

According to example 1 (50 > 10 < 40) 'D > J' is false.
According to example 2 (40 > 10 < 50) 'D > J' is true.

Therefore, we cannot say it true or false. That is why the result is 'uncertain'.

Hope this help you. Have a nice day!

I cant understand about why the answer is uncertain it is just basic conditional statement such as a>b, b<c, c>a. Can any one explain?
