Hard work and smart work are like two sides of a coin. One must need to do both. Because smart work comes from experience and for experience we need to hard work.

I would say smart work comes from hard work only. As there is one theory also that 'Work hard until you get smart. So, in my point of view you can do smart work only if you have work harder in your life.

Actually both hardwork and smartwork gives a best result. But according to me,

Hard work is maximum efforts with minimum ideas.

Smart work is the maximum idea with minimum efforts.

Hard work gives you experience.
Smart work comes with experience.
There is no smart work without hard work.

Example:

When I started learning Java, I did hard work—practising daily, fixing errors.
That gave me experience.
Now, with that experience, I do smart work—write better code in less time.
So, smart work became possible because of hard work.

Hard work leads to Smart work.

If you work hard in the beginning you can learn new things, which can help you to work smartly.

According to my view, the difference between hard work and smart work is;.

I want to reach the 5th floor. So, I will go through the lift. This is smart work. If I will go by steps is nothing but hard work.

By these two ways, we can reach our goal. But if we will go for smart work we don't know when we will drop.

If we go for hard work definitely we will reach our goal but it will take some time.

Hard work never fails.
