Hard work means more efforts but less output whereas smart work means less efforts more output. But in my point of view, though smart work produces more output hard work is too broad our knowledge and concepts.

Hard work is in which we only do physical activity for complete any work.
Smart work is that work in which we do same activity in a smarter way because in an organisation if you have big problem and have less time to solve that problem than if you know how the smarter way to do work you can do it easily. In short, smart way is make any thing more innovative and less time efficient.

According to me :.
Hard work = more efforts but less work.
Smart work = in the less effort we can do more work.
For example : if are going to 5th floor and we using stairs this is hard work.
And if we use lift for going to 5th floor then this is smart work and we are saving our energy.

Smart work is done in less time without wasting time (Mentally Effort).

Hard work: To do the job for entire working time(8hrs)no other activities.
Smart work: To do the job, by taking short cuts and complete earlier (7.45) and 15mins having another activity.

Hard work is what a Labour does.
Smart work is that, what a contractor does.
Ex. While constructing a huz a labour works hard a lot and the contractor orders labours. The income is high for a contractor but not for the Labour. So instead hard work change it to smart work.

I agree with that smart work saves time and allows you to get goals faster than hard work but in the present scenario, there is much competition everywhere so only smart work might not lead you to success so I think rather than comparing both we should do hard work smartly.
