According to my point of view, winning is important because it gives so much motivation to enhance your skill but if your fail then its not your end, you should work hard again and again until you not getting success and scores is like a mirror which shows that where you stand and how much hard work is required, so I think keeping score is very crucial for players as it works like a catalyst for players.
