OS is the most important program that runs on a computer. Computer must have an OS to run other programs & applications. OS performs basic tasks, such as recognizing input from keyboard, sending output to display screen, keeping track of files directories on disk, and controlling peripheral devices such as disk drives & printers.

There are two types of softwares. A SYSTEM SOFTWARE.
One is system sofware.
And another is basic software.
THE OS (OPERATING SYSTEM) IS SYSTEM SOFTWARE.
IT HANDLES HOLE THE SYSTEM.

OS is nothing but a door to communicate user and machine.
Without operating system we cannot use computer (ie) we cannot do anything. With out OS a computer is like a dead machine.

OS is basically meaning that the imp part of computer which performs many tasks. Without it computer can not perform any work because it manages all the tasks.
