Stars twinkle because
the intensity of light emitted by them changes with time
the distance of the stars from the earth changes with time
the refractive index of the different layers of the earth's atmosphere changes continuously, consequently the position of the image of a start changes with time
the light from the star is scattered by the dust particles and air molecules in the earth's atmosphere

It happens just because of atmospheric refraction. When the light from the stars come through the different atmospheric layers when it undergoes rare medium and denser medium and light Bends. And hence we find the position of the image of stars in our eyes at an indefinite position then it actually is.

The scientific name for the twinkling of stars is stellar scintillation (or astronomical scintillation). Stars twinkle when we see them from the Earth's surface because we are viewing them through thick layers of turbulent (moving) air in the Earth's atmosphere.

It is because the light reflected from stars which is directly transferred to earth's surface. The layer of air present over the earth refracts the light reflected by stars so they appear twinkling.

When the light came from stars and reaches the earth's atmosphere due to the presence of different layers in earth's atmosphere. Some time light reaches our eyes or some time not.

Stars do not really twinkle, they just appear to twinkle when seen from the surface of Earth. The stars twinkle in the night sky because of the effects of our atmosphere.

@Pavneet.

The Sun is nearer to earth and we receive a greater amount of light therefore, minor variations in the intensity are not noticeable.

Why do stars appear to be twinkling in the sky?

A. Scattering of light
B. Emission of light
C. Absorption of light
D. Reflection of light

Can anyone tell me? If star twinkles because of different refractive index of earth.

Why doesn't it happens with sun?

It is Due to the refraction of light by the atmosphere.

@Rupesh.

I think it's scattering of light.
