Radar is used for detecting and locating the position of something whereas sonar is used for locating the position of those things which work especially in water.

Because the radar will emit the radiation which is used to detect the aeroplanes which means radio detection and ranging.

Radar is radioactive detection and ranging. Hence for detecting the target at a distance from source it'll be used.
