Light is the fastest one till today so we use light to measure the distance of heavenly bodies by knowing their speed in free space.

Light year means, Eg: When we travel at a speed of light(3*10^8m/s) we will cover the distance of sun in 8sec.

1 light year equals to 90000000000000 km the unit is in km which is the unit of distance so 1 light year is a distance travelled by light in one year.

Light is energy that can travel 3*10^8 m/s.
1 lightyear = 3*10^8*365*24*3600 = 9.4608*10^15 m = 9.4*10^12 km.
1 lightyear = 3*10^8*365*24*3600 = 9.4608*10^15 m = 9.4*10^12 km.

A light year is unit of distance to measure long distances like distances b/w stars. Because it becomes so difficult to measure distances in kilometers. 1 light year = 9.46*10^12 Km. It is a distance traveled by a light in one year. The nearest star to earth next to sun is Alpha Centauri which is about 4.3 light years away. The brightest star of our sky is Siris and is 8.6 light years away from us.
