Synthesis of the first complete gene, a yeast tRNA was demonstrated by Har Gobind Khorana and coworkers in 1972.

Sir Bar Gobind Khorana was an Indian-American who biochemist who shared 1968 Nobel prize for Medicine or Physiology with Marshall W. Nirenberg and Robert W. Holley that showed how the order of nucleotides in nucleic acids, which carry genetic codes of the cell, control the cell's synthesis of proteins. He also received National Medal of Science.
