The Axis powers, also known as the Axis alliance, Axis nations, Axis countries, or just the Axis, was the alignment of nations that fought in the Second World War against the Allied forces. The Axis promoted the alliance as a part of a revolutionary process aimed at breaking the hegemony of plutocratic-capitalist Western powers and defending civilization from communism.
The Axis grew out of the Anti-Comintern Pact, an anti-communist treaty signed by Germany and Japan in 1936. Italy joined the Pact in 1937. The "Rome"Berlin Axis" became a military alliance in 1939 under the Pact of Steel, with the Tripartite Pact of 1940 leading to the integration of the military aims of Germany and its two treaty-bound allies.
At their zenith during World War II, the Axis powers presided over empires that occupied large parts of Europe, Africa, Asia, and the islands of the Pacific Ocean. The war ended in 1945 with the defeat of the Axis powers and the dissolution of the alliance. Like the Allies, membership of the Axis was fluid, with nations fighting and not fighting over the course of the war.

The "Axis" powers were a military and political alliance between Germany, Italy and Japan. Its goals were to achieve vast expansion through aggressive warfare. They promised to fight against Communism and never interfere with each other's foreign takeovers. They fought against the Allied powers (chiefly the US, France, Britain, and the Soviet Union) in World War 2.
Major Axis Powers: Germany, Japan, Italy.
Minor Axis Powers: Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, Croatia and Slovakia (joined or left the alliance separately).
The three main Axis powers were:.
Germany: Fuhrer (Leader) Adolf Hitler.
Italy: Duce (Leader) Mussolini.
Japan: Prime Minister Tojo Hideki.
The two main powers originally referred to as the Rome-Berlin Axis were Germany and Italy. They were joined by Japan in the Tripartite Pact signed on September 27, 1940 in Berlin. A number of other nations joined this alliance under various other pacts and all were thereafter generally referred to as Axis Nations. These included Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Slovakia, and Croatia.

World war II played a very important role in Indian freedom struggle and politics during mid 20th century (i.e 1940-50).
Britain was an allied power while japan was with axis powers, subash chandra bose who wanted to take this as an advantage traveled to Germany 1st and then to japan, freed all the POW's there and started Azad Hind Fauj (INA) in Singapore with the help of japan to fight against a common enemy (i.e Britishers). Before he reached japan the initial steps of organizing INA was taken up by General Mohan singh. Rash Behari bose was a close associate of Subash C Bose who assisted the latter in organizing INA.
Though many of historians argue that the step taken by Bose on supporting fascist powers was a very wrong one, it created a sense of courage and spread of wider nationalist feelings in India. It also spread the nationalist feeling to Britain controlled army of Indians which was one of the main weapon used by Britishers in suppressing the revolts.

Subhas Chandra Bose took the prisoners of axis powers who were captured from the allied power during the battle of Singapore. Around 80000 soldiers were imprisoned and half of them were Indians. Due to the Free India Centre that was set up in Germany by SC Bose which was allowed by Germany, Japan didn't made him sign an agreement. This was how The INA was formed.
