As per Indian government data, India has only 35 % land is irrigated that is Ganga River basin and Yamuna and some part of Krishna and Kaveri and Godavari Rivers area has irrigated.

And the commercial agriculture means sugar cotton etc that are expecting and they require irrigated land or 100-150 cm rainfall and a high temperature of avg 30°c and so it's not possible at all area. And extensive agriculture needs high technology like China Indian agriculture lack of modern technology and plantation agriculture means coconut plant, chikku plant, apple plant etc these plants required special geographic location and climate so subsistence agriculture means agriculture for life requirement of India. So Indian agriculture is subsistence.

"Subsistence agriculture" as the word subsistence itself explains, it is a pattern of agriculture which is done merely for livelihood and to feed the family.

There is not any concept of development involved entire family remain involved in agriculture activity over a small piece of land which ultimately leads to under employment.
