Palghat Gap is a geographic miracle of a bygone era, it has shaped the history and sociology, history and culture of a large section of people over the centuries. Travel through the gap has been happening throughout history, enabling trade and social inter-action. The arrival of Vasco Da Gama and other overseas European and Arabian traders along Kerala's west coast waters around the 14th century AD opened up huge trade opportunities. This called for services of middlemen with skills of negotiation and communication to fill the void in language. The learned Tamil brahmins from the River Kaveri Basin of Pandya and Chola kingdoms seized the opportunity and migrated here in and around Palghat from the 14th century onwards. Because of their scholarship, inter-acting skills and a commonality of faith with the local population, they gained acceptance and were assisted in re-habilitating themselves by the local kings and chieftains. This is how the Palghat villages came to be established. All these facts are confirmed in THE SAGA OF KALPATHY, by M.K.Das, published in 2017.
