Rutherford passed the alpha rays through a thin gold foil and he observed that almost all the rays passed through the gold foil but only few rays which passed through the center of the atom rebounded and made an angle of 180 degree and hence he concluded that they rebounded because the mass was only present at the center or in the nucleus of the atom.

He done a great work and give us the concept of the atomic mass and give that the atomic mass in the nucleus.

He has done a research on gold foil experiment and said that electrons are embedded.

By the old foil experiment of Rutherford by passing alpha rays through a thin gold foil, it is observed that only some of them is returned and delected. (as both nucleus and alpha is positively charged) so he concluded that the nucleus is small according to size of the atom and mass of the atom is concentated in the nucleus.

When the rays are passing through the centre of the gold plate they are almost reflected back with an angle of 180 degrees with incident ray whereas other rays which are passing far away from centre are refracted.
