All metals are hard, and so all not metals are soft - obviously the characteristics of all metals and non metals are opposite to each other. Since diamond is hard, we cannot say that it is a metal. It is an exceptional case in non metals. Diamond is a hard " non - metal ".

As we know that carbon is the most powerful element. Study of only carbon atom will takes years because the only element will form chemistry of organic called "organic chemistry. In diomand there are strond unbreakable covalent bonds exists so it is very harder in nature.

Diamond is very hard material because of the largest number of carbons present in it. We have seen that coal is made up of carbons and both are formed from same process and coal is modified into diamond. So, we found that coal and diamond are found in same mine.

It is because the carbon have sigma bond and arranged like branches and the atom's are 3 dimensional and other allotropes of carbon have smooth surface (ex. Graphite) which by pressing on a hard surface get's erased or eradicated, unlike Diamond.

I get to know that diamond is a the hardest known metal in earth. It can't be broken easily and is given shape by another diamond.
Is it not amazing? We can break other metal (say iron) with cutters and all but diamond with diamond only.

The toughness of platinum is in the range 50 - 135 MPa.m1/2 which is much greater than that in diamond which is in range 7.5 - 10 MPa.m1/2. And this property shows that platinum needs more force to be broken.

Diamond is metal with this feature also it is made of carbon atoms. So here there is strong bond or covalent bond between carbon atoms (atoms are tightly fixed). So these two characteristics combine to make it strong and hard.

Diamond is the allotrope of carbon, which forms strong covalent bonds of sp3 over each other with out any space between them like cage structure. It is so strong that diamond is cuted by another diamond only.

Diamond is the hardest naturally occurring substance found on Earth. But it is not the hardest substance. Wurtzite boron nitride (synthetic) and lonsdaleite (which comes from meteorites) are both harder.
