Deuterium is an isotope of hydrogen which has atomic mass of 2 units which is twice of the that of hydrogen atom which has an atomic mass of one unit. Because of this the molecular mass of deuterium oxide is 20 units, whereas that of normal water is 18 units. Therefore deuterium oxide is called heavy water.

Heavy water is water that contains heavy hydrogen or deuterium. Deuterium differs from the hydrogen usually found in water, protium, in that each atom of deuterium contains a proton and a neutron. Heavy water may be deuterium oxide, D2O or it may be deuterium protium oxide, DHO.

The formula for water molecules is H2O, whereas, the isotopes of hydrogen are protium, deuterium, tritium. So it forms deuterium oxide. It is prepared by the ordinary hydrogen by the method of electrolysis.

Heavy water occurs naturally, although it is much less common than regular water. Approximately one water molecule per twenty million water molecules are heavy water. And also chemical formula is d20.

Water in which the hydrogen in the molecules is partly or wholly replaced by the isotope deuterium, used especially as a moderator in nuclear reactors.

D20 is used in nuclear plants as the moderants or the coolants. They posssess a great heat absorbing power.

Deuterium is an isotopes of hydrogen. And its molecular mass is 22. So deuterium is heavy water.
