Silicon and Germainium are semiconductor materials, which normally prefered in making transistors, diodes ets. Since the semi conductor materials having the characteristics of acting as a conductor if the temperature increases and insulator if the temperatur decreases (negative temperature coefficient).

All semiconductor material has 4 valance e- so it requires less energy to participate in conduction i.e. 0.3 for Ge and 0.7 eV for si and that much of energy is generated at room temperature so it acts like conductor but at low temperature the energy is not so much so it acts like insulator.

These materials having peculiar electrical properties, they neither fully conductor nor fully insulator and we can alter the properties by doping with specific dopant.

Silicons in mostly used because of low leakage current as compared to germanium which has high leakage current at high temperatures.

Both are semiconductors and show the properties of conductor and insulator at high and low temperature respectively.

Silicon and germanium are semiconductors materials which behave both as conductors and insulators.

Si is more widely used in transistors. As si has low leakage current than Ge at high temperatures.

Silicon and Germanium but now today a days we also use Gallium.
