PTFE is a fluorocarbon solid, as it is a high-molecular-weight compound consisting wholly of carbon and fluorine. PTFE is hydrophobic: neither water nor water-containing substances wet PTFE. PTFE has one of the lowest coefficients of friction against any solid. PTFE is used as a non-stick coating for pans and other cookware. It is very non-reactive.

Non-stick pans are cooking pans made from or coated with materials designed to prevent food from sticking to their surface during the cooking process. Most non-stick pans are made using polytetrafluoroethylene (e.g. DuPont's Teflon) coating although newer materials are also used. Health concerns have been raised regarding use of PTFE as a cooking pan coating.

The structure of Teflon is (-CF2-CF2-)n and it is a polymer of (CF2=CF2).Due to addition polymerization of tetraflouroethylene Teflon is formed. Is it in black colour?
