PTFE is a fluorocarbon solid, as it is a high-molecular-weight compound consisting wholly of carbon and fluorine. PTFE is hydrophobic: neither water nor water-containing substances wet PTFE. PTFE has one of the lowest coefficients of friction against any solid. PTFE is used as a non-stick coating for pans and other cookware. It is very non-reactive.

What is teflon ?

This is very common in medical entrance exam.

PTFE is Polytetrafluoroethylene which commonly called as Teflon(C2F6)n.
The bond between carbon and fluorine is very weak.Due to this, their reactivity is low.so non stick cooking utensils are coated with it.

The structure of Teflon is (-CF2-CF2-)n and it is a polymer of (CF2=CF2).Due to addition polymerization of tetraflouroethylene Teflon is formed. Is it in black colour?

How much temperature can Teflon tolerate ?

Teflon tolerate below 327 * Celsius.

Non-stick pans are cooking pans made from or coated with materials designed to prevent food from sticking to their surface during the cooking process. Most non-stick pans are made using polytetrafluoroethylene (e.g. DuPont's Teflon) coating although newer materials are also used. Health concerns have been raised regarding use of PTFE as a cooking pan coating.

Teflon is use in painting of cars and bikes because it is no effect in UV light or in water. And also use in the non stick cooking ware.

Is Teflon dangerous?

Aditi Yadav said: (Feb 8, 2016)
Teflon is less reactive with food than others. Moreover it is less sticky so food does not sticks.

Poly tetra fluoro ethylene is teflon.

PTFE or Teflon can sustain up to a working temperature of 400 deg. Celsius. It is the reason for its non-sticky nature.

PTFE is a fluorocarbon solid, as it is a high-molecular-weight compound consisting wholly of carbon and fluorine. PTFE is hydrophobic: neither water nor water-containing substances wet PTFE, as fluorocarbons demonstrate mitigated London dispersion forces due to the high electronegativity of fluorine. PTFE has one of the lowest coefficients of friction of any solid.
