Firstly decide that which is hardest substance. I think it is the teeth of an animal. I forgot the name found in the sea of Western Europe.

Friends, diamond is the hardest natural made substance.

But the silicone carbide is man made that's all. But the world's hardest material is "Lonsdaleite".

All of you are right that diamond is the hardest material on the earth. But in question he is asking about only Silicon carbide.

Silicon is less in cost that of diamond and to much hard to cut hard materials. We use diamonds also as cutting tool on cutting edge for more harder materials.

Silicon carbide, also known as carborundum, is a compound of silicon and carbon with chemical formula SiC. It occurs in nature as the extremely rare mineral moissanite. Silicon carbide powder has been mass-produced since 1893 for use as an abrasive.

Sure diamond is most hard substance but the cost and availability limit the use of diamond and therefore silicon carbide is used to the cut the very hard metal.
