Air is a mixture of various gases. The main gases present in air are nitrogen (78.1% by volume) and oxygen (20.9% by volume). These two gases together form 99% of the air. Besides these two, air contains small amounts of carbon dioxide (0.03 to 0.04%), water vapour (variable), noble gases (0.94%), and dust particles. The noble gases present in the air are helium, neon, argon, krypton and xenon. Since the percentage of these gases is very small so, they are also called "Rare gases".

The moving air is called wind. Air is needed for life. We cannot live without air. We breathe in air through nose. Air is needed for all living things like plants, animal, human beings etc.

Air is a mixture of gases. A lot of gases are present in it in different proportions. The composition of air is not uniform throughout. Thus it is a mixture.

Actually its a mixture of gases. But although people get confused that its a compound. So first of all they should read carefully the definition of compound.
