Advaita Vedanta is a school of Hindu philosophy and religious practice, giving "a unifying interpretation of the whole body of Upanishads ". The principal, though not the first, exponent of the Advaita Vedanta-interpretation was Shankara Bhagavatpada who systematised the works of preceding philosophers.

Shankaracharya is a commonly used title of heads of monasteries called Mathas in the Advaita Vedanta tradition. The title derives from Adi Shankara, an 9th-century AD reformer of Hinduism. He is honored as Jagadguru, a title that was used earlier only to Krishna. Adi Shankara or Shankara, was an early 8th century Indian philosopher and theologian who consolidated the doctrine of Advaita Vedanta. He is credited with unifying and establishing the main currents of thought in Hinduism. He was born in Kalady and died in 820 AD, Kedarnath.
