liver secretes bile juice which is yellow in colour and contains pigments called bilirubin and biliverdin which are the byproducts of RBC destruction in spleen. Jaundice is characterised by increased serum level of bilirubin.
In normal serum bilirubin level = 0.2-1.0
In jaundice serum bilirubin level is 1.0<
Jaundice is of 3 types:
1. Hemolytic jaundice
2. Hepatic jaundice
3. Obstructive jaundice
The generalised clinical features of all types of jaundice are,
. Pain in abdomen.
. Generalised yellowness of conjunctiva and nails.
. Loss of hunger.
. Yellow coloured urine.
