At an elevation of 3,500 metres (11,500 ft) above sea level, the airport is one of the highest in the world. Its runway, with airport rank 4E, at 4,000 metres (13,000 ft) with a width of 45 metres (148 ft), is designed to handle wide-bodied aircraft in the thin Tibetan air.

The airport serves the city of Lhasa, which is about 62 kilometres (39 mi) from the south-southwest of Lhasa, on the right (southern) bank of the Yarlung Zangbo River. The airport (elevation 3,700 metres (12,100 ft)) was built in 1965. It is a civilian airport, one of the highest airports in the world and has large terminal facilities and is close to the road to Tsetang, the capital of Shannan Prefecture. A second runway was built in 1994 and terminal facilities were upgraded in 2004.
