The term "INS" refers to Indian Naval Ship. All the ships under the service of Indian Navy bear their names with a prefix INS. Also, many naval instalments including bases, air bases and training establishments are also referred as Indian Naval Ship. Such as naval airport INS Dega. Training establishment INS Chilka.

The name is probably brought into usage from HMIS (Her Majesty's Indian Ship) which was the prefix for Indian ships in WW2 and other naval ships of various countries.
