Gravity settling chambers will always be of importance for pre-cleaning of high dust laden gases. They work on the principle of removing dust by reducing the velocity of gas (or) air stream. The gas is directed from the dust generating equipment into the large volume settling chamber, where the velocity drops low enough to let large dust particles drop out by gravity. Dust settling chambers are sometimes equipped with deflectors, to charge the direction of gas flow and so to shorten the settling path of particles, improving collection efficiency. Because of the simple construction, gravity-settling chambers are the lowest in cost, but at the same time also the least effective dust collection devices.

Gravity settling chambers are those chambers through which a fluid stream is passed at a fix velocity but size, distance from duct and density of matter that is suspended to that fluid stream make force to be in different chambers and there those (particles) are settled to bottom of those tanks and then are withdrawn as sludge.

The solid particulate of gas stream which is passed from gravity chamber having higher density than surrounding gas settle under the influence of gravity on the base of the chamber and this theory is based on stoke's law. Oxides of sulphur like sulphur dioxide and oxides of nitrogen like nitric oxide and nitrogen dioxide.

Explanation given by Shreya is correct, But in addition to that the gravity settling chambers are also used to separate the heavy metals and particles from the effluent (waste water generated from the Industry). Which settles in the chambers by gravity only.

Since particles are suspended at a height, a combination of gravity of earth and artificial gravity of the chamber helps to get the particles down on an surface which will then be cleaned and thus getting rid of the particulate matter.

See for example in thermal power stations we are using ESP (eletrostatic precipitator) for settling down suspended particles in flue gas which basically charged, for uncharged particles gravity setting chambers are used.

Suspended particulate matter (SPM) are finely divided solids or liquids that may be dispersed through the air from combustion processes, industrial so setting atmosphere this phenomenon is SPM.

Gravity setting chambers are used to take the hard dust particles from the industry . By using this we can remove hard dust particles .
Refrence :--- In Sr. Inter NCERT text books ,chemistry

Particulate suspended matter are having higher density than other stack gases like SO2,NO2. So when such dust leaden gas is allowed to satel in large chamber in is removed from gas.

Particulate matter is heavier than gases and gravity separation chamber separate the substances according to their weight, heavier substances get separated first.
