Grand Central Terminal is a commuter and intercity railroad terminal at 42nd Street and Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan in New York City, United States. The terminal serves commuters travelling on the Metro-North Railroad to Westchester, Putnam, and Dutchess counties in New York, as well as to Fairfield and New Haven counties in Connecticut. The terminal also contains a connection to the New York City Subway at Grand Central"42nd Street.
Grand Central Terminal's distinctive architecture and interior design have earned it several landmark designations, including an US. National Historic Landmark. The terminal is one of the world's most visited tourist attractions, with 21. 9 million visitors in 2013, excluding train and subway passengers.
The station was built by and named for the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad in the pinnacle of American long-distance passenger rail travel. Until 1991, the terminal also served Amtrak, which moved to nearby Pennsylvania Station upon completion of the Empire Connection. Amtrak briefly returned to the station in Summer 2017 to accommodate track work at Penn Station. The East Side Access project is underway to bring Long Island Rail Road service to the terminal.
Grand Central covers 48 acres (19 ha) and has 44 platforms, more than any other railroad station in the world. Its platforms, all below ground, serve 30 tracks on the upper level and 26 on the lower, though only 43 tracks are currently in use for passenger service. The total number of tracks along platforms and in rail yards exceeds 100 as most previous tracks that are not in regular use are used for the rail yard. Unlike other Metro-North stations, Grand Central Terminal is not owned by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, but by a private company known as Midtown TDR Ventures.

The world's largest train station, in terms of floor area, is Nagoya Station in Nagoya, Japan. However, the Nagoya Station complex incorporates two office towers and an underground shopping concourse, so the railway terminal itself is not large in comparison to others. Shinjuku Station is the second largest.

Three previous buildings serving the same purpose have stood on this site since 1871.
The current Grand Central Station was built by the New York Central Railroad with the intention of drawing passengers away from its rival, Pennsylvania Railroad. Beginning in 1903, the remains of the previous structures were systematically demolished, to make room for the new station, which was completed in 1913.
