When an electron jumps from the valence shell to the conduction band, it leaves a gap. What is this gap called?

But actually for an electron in valence band to jump to the conduction band it has to cross the energy gap. The question was not asked in correct manner. I too vote for energy gap.

Its holes, when electron jumps from valance band to conduction band there is absence of negative charge which give rise to a positive charge called holes which is nothing but absence of electron.
