Voltage regulation in linear regulators will be achieved by dissipating voltage in series element. The series element may be resistor or pass transistor. So it can called series dissipative regulator.

The series dissipative regulator is just a variable resistor with a diode,it dissipates power as heat, As resistor is a linear device so it is a linear regulator

The dissipative topologies we will only use the variable resistor and the breakdown diode.
