It's because of DIBL (when Vds increased this effect comes) effect gate looses control over channel. This is nothing but breakdown.

JFET break down occurs when large drain to source voltage is applied between drain and the source which prevents JFET from resisting the flow of current. At this point JFET has no control over current.

Ideally it should be pinch off since at that point a constant current starts flowing through JFET, however due to early effect it still changes but that change is small. I have no idea as to what is breakdown region in JFET.
