At normal voltage, diode in reverse biased acts as a open circuit. But when the supply voltage is so high jxn barrier of a diode break such that diode allows current to flow and the voltage cause this, is called breakdown voltage.

Can anyone explain this, please?

When diode is in reversed condition, no current flows but when the reversed voltage increases enormously, it leads to junction breakdown and hence diode behaves as shorted path and thus high current flows through it.

If I'm wrong please correct me.

Because, this cause sudden increase in current, which leads to junction breakdown.
