Hfe (with small alphabet (fe)) is ac current gain (Bac) while HFE (with capital alphabet (FE)) is dc current gain(Bdc).
AC current gain for CB is afb (alpha forward current gain of CB).
AC current gain for CB is afb (alpha forward current gain of CB).

In another system of analysis called h parameter , Hfe rather then Bdc is defined as the symbol for current gain this 2 quantity are equal

In the DC analysis of a CE circuit h-parameters are used and Hfe is the current gain Ic/Ib.
