A received signal obviously has very low voltage amplitudes that's why you need variable sensitivity for the receiver to detect up to the weakest signal to be boosted using amplifiers. This is needed for the fidelity or having the exact replica of the transmitted signal.

I think it is Variable sensitivity because the if IF amplifier is maximum condition we can reduce the noise signals.
