Here, l is the quantum number. it is also called as "azimuthal quantum number or "orbital quantum number. It is the quantum number that determines the amount of orbital angular momentum.
Each orbital in an atom is characterized by a unique set of values of the three quantum numbers n, and m, which respectively correspond to the electron's energy, angular momentum, and an angular momentum vector component (the magnetic quantum number).
when l=0, then m=o; which indicates the s-orbital(s-state).
when l=1,then m=-1,0,+1; which indicates p-orbital(p-state).
when l=2, then m=-2,-1,0,+1,+2; which indicates d-orbital(d-state).
