Ring counter is N : 1 counter >>if it is 5, then 5 states.

Johnson counter is 2N : 1 counter>>here 10 states.

General counter is 2^N : 1 counter>>here 32 states.

Just remember - a flip-flop can store one-bit value so the number of states will be 5.

An n-bit ring counter has only n states. Here 5 flip-flops are present (i. e 5 bits) so it has 5 states.
